Why do you need an Oxford Dynamic EQ?


Have you tried to control boomy or harsh frequencies using a traditional static EQ but found that you compromised the integrity of the original recording? There are many scenarios in mixing and mastering where EQ is required, but where the application of static EQ will result in too much or too little change as the signal varies over time. Or, a signal may require compression/expansion in some frequency ranges more than others. Multi-band compression (MBC) is a common solution. However, MBC provides little flexibility over the shape of the processed band and can suffer from static phase distortion. Linear phase MBC requires high processing latency and can exhibit detrimental low frequency artefacts. Many existing dynamic EQs tend to be complex and daunting to use, even for experienced engineers.

1. Will the Oxford Dynamic EQ ever support Avid HDX hardware DSP systems?

2. I already have a multi-band compressor (MBC), why would I want the Oxford Dynamic EQ?

Have you ever struggled to fix a problem by overlapping (even slightly) two adjacent bands? Assuming you’re given the chance to even try, you’ll appreciate the difficulties in getting a consistent and great sounding result. Even with its steep crossover filters, your MBC will be unable to achieve precise dynamic spectral control


3. What advantage does a dynamic EQ have over a regular static EQ?

A static EQ is just that. Set. If you dial in a 5db cut at 1kHz, it’ll be applied irrespective of the level of your incoming signal. Let’s say that you’re only bothered by the 1kHz frequency when the singer is really going for it in a chorus. On one note. If you apply a static EQ, 1kHz is cut all the way through the song and you’ll need to automate your way around the problem.

A dynamic EQ is more kind to your recording, only doing its thing when you need it to. The result is a less processed and more natural sounding. Less is more!
