VST2 Discontinuation – What You Need to Know

Modified on Fri, 21 Mar at 11:45 AM

Sonnox have recently removed VST2 from all of our most recent and future product updates, following Steinberg’s discontinuation of the VST2 format.

Many audio-plugin developers are now transitioning to VST3, AU, and AAX (Pro Tools) as the primary plugin formats, aligning with modern DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) compatibility and standards.

How Does This Affect You?

Legacy Projects – If you have existing projects that rely on Sonnox VST2 plugins, some DAWs (such as Ableton Live and Reaper) will not automatically load VST2 settings into VST3 plugins. This means you may experience missing plugins or lost settings when opening older projects.

Future Updates – All new Sonnox product releases and updates will only support VST3, AU, AAX Native, and AAX-DSP.

What Should You Do Next?

To ensure your projects remain intact:

Manually Replace VST2 Plugins with VST3

Open each project and swap VST2 versions of Sonnox plugins with VST3 before updating.

Save Your Plugin Settings Using the Sonnox Toolbar

If you’re unable to replace VST2 manually, use the Sonnox Toolbar (available in all Oxford products) to save presets. These saved settings can then be loaded into any supported format (VST3, AU, AAX Native, AAX-DSP).

Check DAW Compatibility!

Some DAWs, like Cubase, Studio One, and Bitwig, provide better handling of VST2-to-VST3 migration, while others may require manual intervention.
