Understanding iLok & How to Authorise Your Licences

Modified on Wed, 30 Jul at 9:58 AM

iLok is the licensing system Sonnox uses to protect and manage your plug‑ins. This guide explains what iLok is, the different authorisation types available, and how to authorise your Sonnox licences so you can start using your plug‑ins immediately. It’s for new customers and anyone reinstalling or moving their licences.

Types of iLok Authorisation:

iLok offers three main ways to activate your Sonnox licences. You can choose whichever best fits your workflow:

  1. iLok USB Authorisation (Portable)

    • Requires a physical iLok USB key (2nd or 3rd generation).

    • Licences are stored on the USB key and can be used on any compatible computer by simply plugging in the key.

    • Ideal for engineers working in multiple studios or locations.

  2. Machine Authorisation (Local to One Computer)

    • Stores the licence directly on your computer’s hard drive.

    • No USB key required; works offline once authorised.

    • Perfect for fixed setups where you use the same machine regularly.

  3. iLok Cloud Authorisation (Online Streaming)

    • Licences are accessed from your iLok account over the internet.

    • Requires an active internet connection while using the plug‑in.

    • No USB key or local activation needed; great for temporary setups or when switching between multiple online computers.

Creating and using your iLok account

  1. Create or sign in to your iLok account

    • Go to ilok.com and create a new account or sign in to your existing one.

  2. Install iLok License Manager

    • Download iLok Licence Manager from iLok.com and install it on your Mac or Windows computer.

  3. Provide your iLok details when purchasing or redeeming

    • Whether you buy directly from Sonnox or redeem an activation key from a dealer on the Sonnox website, you’ll be prompted during checkout/redemption to enter:

      • Your iLok User ID

      • Your iLok‑registered email address

  4. Licence deposit

    • Once your details are submitted, Sonnox will deposit your plug‑in licence directly into your iLok account.

    • You’ll receive a confirmation email once the licence has been deposited.

  5. Activate the licence in iLok License Manager

    • Open iLok License Manager and sign in.

    • Locate your Sonnox licence in the list.

    • Drag the licence onto your chosen activation location:

      • iLok USB key

      • This Computer (Machine Authorisation)

      • iLok Cloud Session (via File → Open Cloud Session in iLok License Manager)

  6. Launch your DAW and verify

    • Start your DAW and load your Sonnox plug‑in to confirm it is authorised and working.

Troubleshooting / Alternative Fixes

  • Activation fails?

    • Make sure you’re signed in to the correct iLok account.

    • Update iLok License Manager to the latest version.

    • Try an alternative authorisation method (USB, Machine, or Cloud).

  • Plug‑in still says “Not Authorised”?

    • Re‑scan plug‑ins in your DAW.

    • Restart your computer and try again.

    • If the issue persists, contact Sonnox Support with your iLok ID.
