Why Aren’t There More Factory Presets in Sonnox Plug‑ins?

Modified on Wed, 30 Jul at 4:27 PM

Some Sonnox plug‑ins include a selection of factory presets as useful starting points.
Others do not, and this is an intentional design decision based on the nature of the processing and the wide variation in audio material.

Plug‑ins That Include Factory Presets

The following Sonnox plug‑ins come with built‑in factory presets:

  • Oxford Reverb

  • Oxford Limiter

  • Oxford SuprEsser

  • Oxford Envolution

These presets are designed to:

  • Offer ready‑to‑use starting points for common scenarios.

  • Demonstrate the capabilities of the plug‑in.

  • Help you quickly audition different tonal approaches.

Why Some Plug‑ins Have Few or No Presets

For processors like Oxford EQ, Dynamics, Inflator, and TransMod, the design team felt that fixed presets were less appropriate.
This is because:

  • These tools are highly dependent on source material. What works well for one recording may not work at all for another.

  • The most effective settings are usually tailored to:

    • Genre and style

    • Recording quality

    • Performance dynamics

    • Mix context

  • Presets in these cases could be misleading or encourage unsuitable processing choices.

What’s Included Instead

While they don’t have “creative” presets, some of these plugins include:

  • Example EQ curves (Oxford EQ)

  • Basic operation mode examples (Oxford Dynamics)
These are provided to illustrate functionality rather than to be used as finished settings.

Tips for Building Your Own Presets

  • Start from a neutral or bypassed state, make your adjustments, then save as a user preset in your DAW or plug‑in host.

  • Name your presets based on purpose (“Vocal Smooth”, “Kick Punch”, “Acoustic Bright”) so you can recall them quickly.

  • Over time, you’ll create a library tailored to your workflow and music style.
