AMD “Zen 5” CPUs – Sonnox Plug‑ins Not Working – Known Compatibility Issue

Modified on Mon, 30 Mar at 11:22 AM

Sonnox plug‑ins currently do not run on systems using AMD “Zen 5” CPUs (including Ryzen 9000, Ryzen AI 9, Ryzen AI 300 series) due to a known compatibility issue between PACE iLok protection and the AMD CPU architecture.

This affects all iLok‑protected software, not just Sonnox products. This article explains the cause, current status, and what to do if you own or are considering one of these systems.

What’s Affected

  • Processors:

    • AMD Ryzen 9000 series

    • AMD Ryzen AI 9 series

    • AMD Ryzen AI 300 series

  • Operating systems: Windows (all versions)

  • Impact: Sonnox plug‑ins will fail to run or authorise on these systems.

Understanding the Issue

A bug in the AMD “Zen 5” CPU architecture disrupts how iLok‑enabled software checks and validates licences.

  • iLok.com response: iLok License Manager v5.9.1 includes a temporary “flash fix.”

  • Why Sonnox still doesn’t work: All plug‑in vendors will be required to update their products to integrate iLok’s fix.

  • AMD response: AMD is preparing firmware updates to address the root cause permanently.

Current Status & Recommendations

  1. Do not install Sonnox plug‑ins on affected AMD “Zen 5” systems at this time.

  2. Wait for updates from both AMD (firmware) and Sonnox (plug‑in updates).

  3. If you need to run Sonnox plug‑ins now, use:

    • An Intel‑based system

    • Or an earlier‑generation AMD CPU that is not affected.

  4. Follow iLok, AMD, and Sonnox announcements for progress updates.

Temporary Workarounds

  • Use a supported system for your production work.

  • Move your iLok licence to the supported system until this compatibility issue is resolved.

FAQ / Common Questions

Q: Can I install Sonnox plug‑ins now and update later?
A: Installation is not recommended. They will not function until both the AMD firmware and Sonnox updates are applied.

Q: Does this affect Mac users?
A: No. This issue is specific to Windows systems using AMD “Zen 5” CPUs.

Q: Where can I read the official iLok statement?
A: See iLok’s AMD Zen 5 FAQ.
